What Do The Neighbors Think?

When we think of our community impact, we must include the neighbors of those we serve.  Very often branches and bushes are hanging over their driveways and on their fences.  For those who have overgrowth flowing over into the sidewalks it impedes pedestrians and their enjoyment of navigating the neighborhood.  We understand the goal of keeping up the curb appeal of properties and we are so very happy to be able to provide the secondary benefit to the neighbors by supporting older adults with these and other challenging tasks.  At this home in South Euclid, we are off to a great start!

Minor Painting

What is Minor Painting?

We consider minor painting something that can be completed within a 2hour window and something specific.  For instance, a single house or garage door, window frames, thresholds, handrails, areas of a porch, small shed or some minor areas around the bottom of the house.  In some instances, a very small patio or wheelchair ramp may be appropriate.  If the need is to have all of the windows, doors and large surface areas painted or an area that requires a ladder, then a professional service would be more appropriate.

What about if the area requires major prep work such as scraping?  We will do light scraping when needed.  This is usually when the paint is already peeling.  If the paint is just caked on from many coats over the years, then that would require a professional service.  This door is a great example of what we consider minor painting.

Why is it Important?

Minor painting is important as very often having areas that are not protected from the elements can result in the wood rotting and becoming unstable.  In addition, housing violations often include all of the examples listed of areas that need painting.

Minor Repairs are repairs that are very general in nature.  For instance this past year we have re-installed a falling coat rack, replaced a broken mailbox and hammered a few boards on a fence.  These are all projects that a volunteer can do.  Other repairs while considered minor, may require a professional, such as replacing a threshold, replace a broken light that falls under a safety hazard (such as exterior) or repairing a window.

A Little Bit

A Little Bit goes a long way

With most homes our first yard project includes addressing an array of issues that have accumulated over time.  Just like at this home in Lyndhurst.  There were a variety of bushes, branches and weeds.  What stands out is this small but overgrown bush blocking part of the screened porch.  The homeowner was hoping that we could cut this bush down enough so her son could repair and paint the porch.  We were glad to help!

Exterior Cleaning

EXTERIOR CLEANING

Who doesn’t enjoy clean windows?  For some older adults and people with disabilities who have a limited view of the outdoors due to mobility challenges, having clean windows can really affect their day.  They may only have access to certain rooms or are unable to stand.  Dirt and grime on windows is  unsightly, blocks sunshine and your clear view of the outside.  Window care has become an increasingly popular service for many of our CARE Members.

Exterior cleaning can also include cleaning off the moss that creates a very unsightly garage or areas of the home, plus can make sidewalks, steps and driveways slippery and dangerous.  Excessive moss and grime on a garage or house is a common housing violation.  This photo of a garage is a great example of the type of cleaning that a volunteer can do.

General sweeping of  the garage or on the deck or porch is also something we can assist with.  There is no definitive list but we do know that if cleaning the area can cause damage, or if ladders or pressure washers are needed, then it would be more appropriate for a professional service.
